Occupational Therapy (OT) is the use of purposeful activities to restore and maximize independence, prevent associated disability and maintain health. Procedures include use of specific activities (such as eating and grooming) to improve or restore function, to compensate for dysfunction, or to minimize disability. OT provides experience and practice with actual tasks to enable residents to participate to the fullest extent possible in activities in their living environment. (return to top of page) Speech Therapy (ST) is the treatment of a communication deficit or a swallowing problem in order to manage, rehabilitate, or modify such disorders. Procedures include treatment in the areas of language disorders, cognitive disorders and swallowing risks. This involves cognitive retraining (memory), oral motor exercise (speech and swallowing deficits) and proper identification of appropriate dietary needs to sustain weight and strength.
